Gratitude is an important aspect of resilience. (If the word resilience makes you roll your eyes, read this.)

But how we are traditionally taught to do gratitude practice is not helpful and in some cases, harmful.

We’re taught to make a list of the things we’re grateful for. The idea is that it’s supposed to make us feel good.

What usually happens is we make a list of the things we should be grateful for: a warm bed, a loving partner, kids who are doing ok, plenty of clients, etc., etc.

But then you look at the list–remember, you’re not feeling so happy or hopeful to begin with–and you don’t feel grateful. So now not only are you feeling crappy, you’re also feeling guilty, and telling yourself you’re ungrateful.

So now you feel even worse.

I propose you do it the other way around, starting with the feeling.

Here’s a guided gratitude experience, starting “backwards.”
